If - Rudyard Kipling 내가 가장 좋아하는 시

If you can keep your head when all about you  

    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,   

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

    But make allowance for their doubting too;   

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

 

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;   

    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;   

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

    And treat those two impostors just the same;   

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

 

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

내게 인생의 길잡이 같은 시다..

킹스맨인지 미션 임파서블인지 기억은 잘 안나지만 시의 첫 구절이

영화 속 대사로 나왔다.

 

모두가 너를 비난할 때 냉정을 유지할 수 있다면

모두가 너를 의심할 때 네 자신을 믿을 수 있다면

이 대사를 들었을 때 온몸으로 전율을 느꼈다.

 

 

처음에는 노벨 문학상의 수상자이자 정글북의 작가인

러디어드 키플링이 쓴 시의 구절이었다는 것을 몰랐다.

 

그저 소름돋게 마음에 와닿는 영화의 한 대사인줄 알았지만

머리속에서 그 구절들이 잊혀지지가 않아

집에와서 검색을 해보니 러디어드 키플링의 '만약'이라는 시였다.

 

이후 친구들에게 이런 얘기를 하면 다들 웃으며

에휴...얼마나 비난을 많이 받았으면ㅋㅋㅋ

이런 식으로 농담을 하며 나만큼 감동을 받지는 않았다ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

 

하지만 이 시를 알게 된 이후로 나는 감정적으로 힘이 들거나

어떻게 행동해야 할 지 모를 때마다 이 시를 찾게 되었다.

실제로 찬찬히 이 시를 소리내어 읽거나

정성들여 한 자 한 자 노트에 따라적으면 마음이 가라앉는다.

간절히 원하는 무언가를 이루고자 할 때는 누구보다도 내 자신을 믿게 해주는 시이다.

 

힘들게 노력해서 쌓아온 모든 것들이 허무하게 무너질지라도

시에 나와있는대로 한 마디 불평없이 묵묵히 다시 시작할 수 있을 것 같다.

 

행복할 때, 우울할 때 그 어떤 마음 상태이더라도

이 시는 아무리 읽어도 지겹지가 않다.

매번 감동을 준다.

 

항상 힘이 되어주고 위로가 되어주는 한 편의 시가 있어서

정말 다행이다.
